WI - Cormorant Research Group | The Bulletin - No. 2, September 1996 | Editorial | |
EDITORIAL
This is already the second volume of the Cormorant Research Group Bulletin. In the meantime, the International Waterfowl and Wetlands Research Bureau, of which we formally form part, has changed its name into Wetlands International and has just changed its (European) headquarters as well from Slimbridge (UK) to the Staring Centre, P.O. Box 59, NL-6700 AB Wageningen, The Netherlands by 1 October 1996.
During last year, the Cormorant Research Group has been involved in its second official international workshop on Great Cormorants. This conference took place in Bologna, Italy, in November 1995. News from this workshop will be summarised elsewhere in this volume, as well as a short review of some recent international developments.
Although we were glad to receive contributions from quite a few countries, we have still been unable to really internationalise the scope of this volume. In spite of one short note on African cormorants, almost all contributions to this volume are concerned with Great Cormorants in European countries. For next year's issue we would heartily welcome contributions from other countries' cormorant workers. The publication in 1995 of a special issue of Colonial Waterbirds, completely dedicated to the population increase of Double-crested Cormorants in North America and its consequences for aquaculture practices (a review of this publication is found elsewhere in this issue), clearly shows that attention is given to this fascinating group of birds in other continents as well. Possibly, the installation of regional coordinators for the Americas, Africa, Asia and Australasia (see elsewhere) will enable us to publish more information on these areas in the next volumes of the CRG Bulletin.
